Classify a LiDAR point cloud

Bring a .las or .laz, choose the classification tier, get the terrain products.

What a LiDAR job does

A LiDAR scan already is a point cloud, so there is no reconstruction: the job labels the points and builds the products from them. It accepts LAS, LAZ, E57, PLY, PCD and BPF, in any coordinate system and in metres or feet — lengths such as the ground filter's window are converted to the cloud's own unit.

Choose the tier

  1. Standard: the ground filter plus OpenPointClass — ground, vegetation, buildings. Fast, on CPU.
  2. Deep learning: Point Transformer V3. On the Autzen reference it scored 95.6% whole-scene accuracy and 83% on buildings (the standard tier: 19%), and it adds cars, trucks, poles and fences.
  3. Already classified by your provider? Process without classification and your classes are kept exactly as delivered.

Ground filter

The default, Automatic, uses SMRF and asks a second filter (CSF) to confirm on gentle terrain. That keeps stadiums, warehouses and large flat roofs out of the terrain model while steep ground is kept. On the Autzen reference it cut the terrain model's error from 0.41 m to 0.08 m. See “Choose settings for your objective” for when to pick SMRF or CSF alone.
